Values & History

We've been helping customers save big since 1946. That's when our founder Jim Read opened his very first store, selling military surplus at deep discount prices. The rest, as they say, is history. Today, the third generation of the Read family is leading the way, with 300+ stores across the nation and more than 1.5 million shoppers hitting the aisles each week. That makes Grocery Outlet the nation's largest extreme value retailer. A feat we're more than proud of.

Industry Performance

Market Demand & Advantage

Grocery Outlet is one of the largest opportunistic buyers of grocery items in the country, and we sell name-brand items to customers for up to 60% off conventional grocery store retail prices. Since we buy extreme bargains from suppliers, we can maintain strong margins for our Independent Operators while still selling at low prices for our customers. Our customers love saving money on brands they know as well as discovering new ones. That's why we have seen 16 years of consecutive, same-store sales growth.

Training & Support

Training: Each Independent Operator candidate is required to complete our Aspiring Operator in Training (AOT) program before accepting a store assignment. This year alone we invested $1.5 million in our Independent Operator training program. Once you become an Independent Operator, you will have marketing and sales support from Grocery Outlet whenever you need it.

Support: We also support our Independent Operators with mentorship, marketing, finance, and accounting professionals to assist with any questions or issues that come up. Empowerment: We empower our Independent Operators to make the best decisions for their store because no one knows their store or community better.

Ideal Candidate & Qualifications

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has 4-5 years of retail management experience (grocery preferred)
  • Has proven sales and merchandising skills
  • Owns one or more small businesses in a variety of retail sectors
  • Is a retail leader and an aspiring entrepreneur with a passion for running their own store
  • Knows what it means to build and lead teams
  • If you're not sure you qualify, a call with one of our recruiters may help answer your questions
