Values & History
Expedia Cruises’ unique position allows us to differentiate ourselves over the competition by taking the best of what we have across a proven franchise system of over 35 years – Expedia CruiseShipCenters – and combining it with a powerful and recognized online travel brand – Expedia – to bring the best of both worlds together. Our enhanced omnichannel approach not only gives our customers the ability to book when, where, and how they choose, but gives our franchisees additional and highly valuable lead generation channels.
Industry Performance
The cruise industry is a vibrant and thriving sector that offers a unique and exciting vacation experience for millions of travelers worldwide. With luxurious ships and a wide array of destinations, the cruise industry has long captivated the imaginations of adventure seekers, families, and relaxation enthusiasts alike. Cruise passenger volume is expected to reach 30 million by 2024 and 85% of travelers who have cruised before say they will cruise again (CLIA). This upward trajectory is also projected to continue well past 2026.
According to CLIA, 70% of cruisers choose to book their vacation with a travel agent. Or better yet, a cruise specialist who can navigate through the sea of options available to today’s cruisers. With so many destinations, ships, and staterooms to choose from, more and more travelers are looking for expert, in-person advice from a trusted professional. Plus, cruise lines continue to invest billions of dollars to meet the expected demand for cruise vacations, with an impressive 60+ new ships still planned to enter the market between now and 2028.
Training & Support
Expedia Cruises has over 100 corporate staff at our headquarters, and we all share one mission – “Empower our franchise owners with a proven system to grow a profitable and valuable business.” For us, that means giving you – our franchisees – the tools, systems, and support you need to be successful. We also help you troubleshoot issues by offering support in the field, as well as outstanding online and phone support. Great support also means great communication. When you call us for a question, we will return your call promptly, armed with answers.
Initial Training takes 4-9 months concurrently with store build-out. Franchisees will first learn how to sell travel
as an agent before attending our 5-day Cruise Management Academy training in Vancouver, BC which will
focus on business management and team leadership. Two dedicated Start-Up Managers at corporate office will
guide new Franchisees through Center build-out and training with weekly check-in calls.
We host annual conferences for our franchisees — either on a seven-day cruise or based somewhere in central United States. The conferences give franchisees a chance to meet, mingle, learn, and have fun. After all, fun is what this business is all about!
Ideal Candidate & Qualifications
Successful franchisees are proactive, outgoing leaders who want to leverage Expedia CruiseShipCenters’ proven system to sell travel, earn income and build equity. They want to be active full-time owners and managers in a retail business. They are business minded and organized, but also nurturing with the ability to coach and motivate a large sales team. They enjoy meeting new people, have an interest in travel, and enjoy helping other people get the most out of life whether that’s by exploring the world or achieving their sales goals as a travel agent. They also recognize that by working together with a team of independent sales agents, and by recruiting and training those sales agents, they can grow their business far beyond the scope of what they would be able to achieve by selling travel on their own.
Purchasing an Expedia Cruises
Our startup costs are relatively low for a retail franchised business, since minimal store build-out is required and no inventory needs to be purchased. Although the upfront franchise fee is only $39,000, an Expedia Cruises franchisee should expect to invest around $167,250 to $292,245 USD to get their business up and running. We require you to have a minimum net worth of $750,000 and a minimum liquid capital of $250,000 (cash that’s on hand or easily accessible). Costs will vary by region and necessary renovations required to open your doors. Since our Vacation Consultants are Independent Contractors paid by commission only, there is no inventory that you need to buy, or employee salaries you need to pay, in order to start selling travel products to customers.
