In this week’s FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma blog, we’re discussing what to do when your career trajectory stalls out. And if you happen to be one of the millions of employees who feel that they’ve gone as far as they can go in their career, you’re clearly not alone. But what are the warning signs? How can we affect change when we don’t have a passion for our job? And what are our options once we’ve come to this inevitable realization? Is there any real hope for what lies next in our careers?
Even though it was a rhetorical question, the answer is yes. If you count yourself among those who feel like their work life is passing them by, you’ve got a lot of company. Some recent studies have revealed that only one-third of U.S. employees feel truly engaged in their job. That’s pretty low, and suggests what we’ve suspected for quite some time. Yes, there are lots of disaffected workers out there. No, they don’t have much of an idea about what to do about it. Take heart, FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma is here to help…
How to Know You’re Stuck
Perhaps you don’t like your job very much, that’s fairly common. But it can be much more difficult to confront if it involves a career path in which you’ve committed lots of time and effort. How do you know when you’re stuck? Many behavioral and career experts have studied this issue, the majority of which agree that there are tell-tale signs that you’ve become unmotivated about your work future. A disassociation, being in a fog, or even feeling like you’re on autopilot are fairly common. This is often followed by procrastination – which is another way to put off dealing with the issue at hand. And many individuals who feel this way are devoid of what to do about it.
What You Can Do About It
First and foremost, you need to jolt yourself awake and confront your true feelings of discontent. Think of Cher in the classic movie, “Moonstruck,” when she exclaims, “SNAP OUT OF IT!” Of course, we know it’s not that simple for everyone. But if you couch your effort into a greater mission of self-improvement, you can make things easier on yourself. Think of your passions in life. What do you love? What are you good at? How might you translate these factors into the potential to earn a living equal to or greater than your present job? You may already be aware, but the internet is jam-packed with self-help articles, quizzes, exercises, and personality tests that can get you started. At FranNet, we employ the “Entrepreneurial Readiness Profile.” It’s a four-part survey of your preferences, work style, lifestyle, and business ownership goals. It only takes a few minutes to complete, and your answers will be quite instrumental in helping FranNet of DFW & Oklahoma determine the franchise opportunity that best matches up with your preferences.
How We Can Help
Once you’ve taken our franchise quiz, our complex algorithms process your answers and reveal the opportunities the best match up with your strengths and experience. The results are quite specific and could be the answer you’ve been looking for to get your career back on track. You’ll be provided with snapshots of the franchise brands that suit your interests and work style. With our help and guidance, you’ll learn more about each one that interests you. When you’re ready to take the next steps, we’ll facilitate introductions to the franchisor’s brand representatives – and that’s where the chemistry either happens, or it doesn’t. Either way, it’s your choice and there will be several alternatives to consider as you continue through the process. If you decide to pursue further, we’ll go further in depth to review the brand’s franchise disclosure document (FDD) and arrange validation sessions with brand executives and existing franchisees. If you’re still sold on a particular concept, you’ll be invited to a Discovery Day session at the brand’s HQ. This is the next-to-last step in the FranNet process. What remains is your decision to move forward or not. As we always say, we’re happy to offer our advice, but all decisions belong solely to you.
